An
antibiotic drug reaction occurred at the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of
Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Andhra Pradesh, which took 3 lives and left
16 patients ill.
The incident was the result of
administration of a dose of Ceftriaxone, to 19 women through an
intravenous route. Soon after the administration, reactions started to
develop and a total of 19 patients had vomiting, diarrhoea, high blood
pressure and breathing problems.
The resident medical officer (RMO) of RIMS, stated that, “After
they showed negative reactions, we administered an antidote to all 19,
moved seven to our intensive care unit (ICU) and sent three to King
George Hospital (KGH) in Visakhapatnam as their health was deteriorating
rapidly. Ten continue to be treated at the women’s ward as their
condition is improving”.
The victims who died, belonged to
Kasipuram village (24 years), Palasa (38 years) and Kuppili village (51
years). After the mis-happening, the hospital authorities mentioned that
Ceftriaxone was also administered to patients of other wards, on the
same day, but no reaction case was reported.
As per the discussions with the doctors
and nurses, medical authorities have suspected that the there might be a
problem in the preparation of the injections using diluents or a
particular pack of medicines may be contaminated. The samples of the
medicine have been sent for laboratory tests.
Officials from Directorate of Medical
Education and the Drug Control, had an emergency meeting as per the
directions of the Chief minister of state and ordered an inquiry of the
incident. Pharmacology vigilance officials in Delhi have also been
informed to look into the issue.
